GRANT’S BLOCK
Providence, RI
Grant’s Block is a vibrant community space in the heart of downtown Providence, Rhode Island. For years, this privately owned lot served as an informal neighborhood hub. Residents brought their dogs, children from the nearby daycare played outside, and the space hosted beloved events like movie nights, bocce tournaments, and taco fests. As part of the renovation of the adjacent buildings, the owner envisioned a more intentional design for the site, while keeping future development possibilities open, recognizing the ongoing flux of development in the city core. The design team created a flexible, multi-use space that could evolve with the neighborhood, using simple interventions that can be adapted over time.
The design is straightforward. Low cedar benches define the edges and provide generous seating, while integrated raised planters hold trees, shrubs, and perennials that offer shade and seasonal interest. A central brick and stonedust court with movable furnishings is vertically framed by catenary lights, visually linking the space to the new restaurant patio. A larger open area is bordered by a repurposed shipping container, which stores furniture when not in use, and a compact dog park featuring artificial turf, logs, and a fountain.
While the space may appear simple, it was thoughtfully designed to meet the current needs of the community and allow for a future that is not wholly understood. Since completion, it has once again become a lively, well-used anchor in the neighborhood and is a clear example of the value of small but intentional urban spaces.
